Auto Club Speedway (formerly California Speedway) is one of the most modern circuits in America and has the distinction of holding the world closed-circuit speed record with an average lap speed of over 240 mph in the heyday of kart champ cars.

Fontana itself is a heavily industrialized city and it is not one that you might immediately imagine would host such a facility. The site has an industrial past of its own; The 880-acre Kaiser Steel Mill that once stood there was built in 1942 at the height of World War II to make steel for warships. The inland location was specifically chosen to be out of range of Japanese warships.

At its height, the sprawling plant employed 10,000 workers, turning out the steel needed to build the Liberty ships. It became an economic powerhouse for the local region but the post-war years and competition from overseas saw a steady decline, and by the end of 1983, Kaiser Steel went bankrupt and was closed forever.

Renovation

A celebration certainly, a sendoff perhaps, the WISE Power 400 at Auto Club Speedway in Fontana on Sunday will combine elements of a stored past, a dynamic future and a keep-your-eyes-glued-to-the-road focus on the present .

It will be the silver anniversary of the venue originally dubbed the California Speedway, built on the site of a steel mill hard by Interstates 10 and 15. The 25 years were marked by three stretches of dominance, with Jeff Gordon winning the first NASCAR race at the speedway in 1997 and three of the first eight, Jimmie Johnson winning six times in 15 years beginning in 2001 and Kyle Busch winning four times recently, including in 2019.
