The 2021 tennis season has started as the 2021 Australian Open gets underway. The Australian Open was a Grand Slam tournament that was not affected by COVID-19 in 2020, but it is certainly not the case this time around. The tournament was initially scheduled to begin on January 18 and go on till 31, but the officials decided to postpone it for three weeks. As far as action is concerned, the star-studded field is led by world’s top player Novak Djokovic, who looks to clinch his third consecutive Australian Open title. Djokovic also holds the record for the men’s eight Australian Open wins.

Rafael Nadal had a chance to make some history of his own. Nadal is tied with Roger Federer for the most men’s Grand Slam singles titles, but will miss his chance to advance after losing to No. 5 Stefanos Tsitsipas in the semi-finals. Federer, on the other hand, is out of the Australian Open after recovering from a serious knee injury. The Swiss star plans to return to the Qatar Open in March.

Naomi Osaka is the 2021 Australian Open champion after defeating Jennifer Brady 6-4, 6-3 in 77 minutes in the women’s final in Melbourne. It is Osaka’s second Australian Open win – after winning the title in 2019 – and fourth career Grand Slam championship after winning the US Open in 2018 and 2020. Osaka had to beat some previous major winners on their way to the title, going through Garbine Muguruza and Serena Williams in the quarterfinals and semifinals before collecting their fourth Major in a win against Brady. This is the second time Osaka has completed a US Open-Australian Open double. Williams, Justin Henin and Kim Clijsters are the only other female players to score this century.
