Highlights:
Australia looked in a spot of bother in the chase after being reduced 96 for five in 12.2 overs, but Matthew Wade and Marcus Stoinis produced a sterling unbeaten partnership of 81 runs off just 41 balls to take their team to victory in the semi-final clash against Pakistan.
Captain Babar Azam and his opening partner Mohammad Rizwan gave Pakistan a brilliant start again. After Babar fell for 39, Fakhar Zaman and Rizwan added 72 runs off 46 balls for the second wicket to put their team on top.
Rizwan was dismissed for 67 by Mitchell Starc while Asif Ali fell for a golden duck. Shoaib Malik too fell cheaply as Pakistan looked for a big finish. Despite wickets falling at the other end, Fakhar Zaman continued to thrash the Aussies to all parts of Dubai, remaining unbeaten on 55 off 32 balls as Pakistan posted a total of 176 for four.
Score:
Pakistan: 176/4 (20)
Australia: 177/5 (19)
This was a different kind of heartbreak. Pakistan and Australia had played one out a classic in the group stage, where Akram had broken the game open at the death, powering Pakistan to a pulsating ten-run win. In the final, Pakistan were cut to ribbons by Shane Warne and Glenn McGrath in what remains, in terms of balls remaining, the most one-sided knockout game in World Cup history. Australia won with almost 30 overs to spare. Against, arguably, Pakistan’s most gifted white-ball side.
World Cup Final:
On Sunday night in Dubai, Stoinis and Mitchell, school-mates and long-time friends will face off in a World Cup final in Dubai, with Langer watching as Australia coach.
Just as they did in their respective T20 World Cup semi-finals over the last 48 hours, back in 2009 both Stoinis and Mitchell were heroes for Scarborough. Stoinis made 189 in the semi-final. Then in the final, Mitchell, just two months shy of his 18th birthday, produced a match-winning spell taking 4 for 26 to help Scarborough beat Bayswater-Morley to win the premiership.
