Auston Taylor Matthews (born September 17, 1997) is an American professional ice hockey center and alternate captain of the Toronto Maple Leafs of the National Hockey League (NHL). Born in San Ramon, California, Matthew and his family moved to Scottsdale, Arizona, when he was an infant. After playing baseball and hockey as a child, his particular interest in hockey developed after playing the local Phoenix Coyotes. A product of the USA Hockey National Team Development Program in the United States Hockey League (USHL), Matthews played for the ZSC Lions of the Swiss National League before being drafted into the NHL in 2016, winning the Swiss Cup title the same year. Matthews was widely considered the draft’s top prospect, and was selected by the Toronto Maple Leafs first overall.

Mustache
Austin Mathews fulfilled his pledge to shave off his trademark mustache if he raised a certain amount for the move.
The Toronto Maple Leafs forward set a target of $134,000 on October 28, passed it on November 20, and celebrated Wednesday after raising $148,124 in support of men’s health, including prostate cancer, testicular cancer, mental health and suicide prevention.
“Hey everyone, the end of the month is here,” Matthews said via Twitter. “I just want to say thank you for all the support and donations to our Movember campaign. It’s been an amazing month, but a deal is a bargain. It’s time to take it [mustache] off.”
Matthews has raised $214,789 since 2020, despite not reaching $134,000 last year.
“The [mustache] is gone!” Movember wrote on Instagram. “Thanks to @austonmatthews for your epic support and to the Unreal fans and partners who helped surpass their $134,000 goal to change the face of Men’s Health. Although Moe is gone (for now), One thing still remains: The need to support Men’s Health is a year-long, worldwide effort. Tag a mo you know who’s been waiting for this moment and grab a beard.”
When it comes to his mustache, Matthews’ teammates might miss it. Maple Leafs forward William Nylander and former Toronto forward Zach Hyman said they “love it” in a 2019 Sportsnet YouTube video.
“My wife would kill me if I [Matthew] were shaking a mustache,” Hyman said.
With his goals met, Matthews is no longer rocking the signature stache, but has proved that he is a man of his word.
