Austin Dillon eliminated two of NASCAR’s best drivers to win Sunday’s Cuphttps://www.nascar.com/drivers/austin-dillon Series race at Richmond, and neither were happy about it.
Dillon initially drove around the final corner on the final lap to pass Joey Logano, who had taken the lead on the restart a lap and a half earlier. The driver of the No. 3 Richard Childress Racing Chevrolet then came down, turned left toward a passing Denny Hamlin, and caused the No. 11 Toyota to turn sharply to the right and hit the wall.
With no one left around him to throw a bumper to, Dillon sprinted across the start-finish line to win the race and find himself in the Richmond race despite entering the race in 32nd place during a terrible 2024 season. Shut out in the playoffs.
Logano initially displayed more raw emotion than Hamlin, spinning his tires in front of the No. 3 team on the pit road postseason, then calling Dillon’s actions a “chicken (expletive)” move during an interview with USA Network.
Hamlin was thinking about the bigger picture post-race, understanding that the Wild Wild West-like nature of the battle for the lead on the last lap is more common in the Cup Series now.
Wreck
Dillon, who had a fast car all weekend, worked his way around Denny Hamlin to take the lead late in the race and appeared headed for victory when a crash with less than two laps of the 400 remaining. Sent the race into overtime.
All lead-lap cars elected to pit and Dillon was first off pit road, followed by Joey Logano and Hamlin. Logano got a good jump on Dillon on the restart and took the lead.
On the final lap entering Turn 3, Dillon spun into the corner and into the back of Logano, knocking him out of the way. Hamlin then pulled alongside Dillon but ended up in the wall himself.
Dillon took the checkered flag for his first win in nearly two years in the No. 3 Richard Childress Racing Chevrolet. RCR’s last win at Richmond came in 2013 with driver Kevin Harvick.
Crash
Austin Dillon spun Joey Logano and then crashed Denny Hamlin to clinch a spot in the playoffs.
Dillon lost the lead to Logano on a green-white-checker restart before Dillon spun and hooked Hamlin on the final lap as Hamlin went for the lead in Turn 4 after Dillon spun Logano.
It was an embarrassing display of driving by a driver desperate for the playoffs. And although it is easy to blame Dillon for his actions, the real blame lies with NASCAR as the sanctioning body refuses to consistently enforce driving standards for its drivers.
When Dillon was asked if his actions were justified by NBC, he said, “I don’t know man, it’s been two years and this is the first car I’ve had a chance to win.”
