Prediction
Manchester United travel to Spain this week to face Atletico Madrid in the Champions League. Neither side is performing as expected in their home league and an early exit from the Champions League can prove disastrous for any manager.
We are supporting the first leg in Spain to end in a stalemate as neither side is in the best of form yet and are obliged to be cautious ahead of a Champions League tie that could define their entire season. Atletico Madrid have lost three in all competitions and won three of their last six matches, while Man Utd are unbeaten in their last six but three of those games have ended in draws.
We are not expecting this game to produce much in the way of goals and we are confident that the whole 90 minutes will be tense and tense. Atletico under Simeone are known for their strong defensive ability, however, this has been questioned this season, with five of Man Utd’s last six outings in all competitions scoring 2.5 goals. Man Utd’s three draws in their last five matches have each ended in the same 1-1 scoreline, so don’t be surprised if Wednesday’s clash ends the same way.
Highlights
Manchester United and Atletico Madrid will have it all to play at Old Trafford next week after an entertaining 1-1 draw at Wanda Metropolitano in a Champions League round-of-16 battle on Wednesday.
The home team began the game on the front foot, quickly taking the lead after Joao Felix shot home a header from an excellent cross by Brazilian full-back Rennon Lodi.
Sime Versalco should have really doubled the lead before half-time for the Spanish champions before the break, removing Viktor Lindelof over David de Gea’s crossbar.
United performed better than expected in the first half, relying on a spirited second half to achieve a positive final result. Ralph Rangnick’s replacement gave the Red Devils a new lease of life late in the game, when Anthony Elanga lay down a through ball from Bruno Fernandes before confidently passing Jan Oblak.
