Recap
When Justin Verlander was working hard and needed 45 pitches for two innings, Astros manager Dusty Baker was concerned that he would have to go early in his bullpen.
Instead, the veteran ace bent down and found a slot, scoring 11 runs in six strong innings to help Houston beat the New York Yankees 4-2 in their AL Championship Series opener on Wednesday night.
“This man, he has the mental fortitude,” Baker said. “When he’s down and out and it looks like you’ve got him in trouble, this man, he can dial it up.”
Yuli Guriel launched a tiebreaking homer for Houston in the sixth. Chas McCormick and Jeremy Pea also went deep as the AL West champions improved to 4–0 in the playoffs after going 106–56 during the regular season.
The Astros are in their sixth consecutive ALCS, trying to reach the World Series for the fourth time in that period, against a New York team in the LCS for the first time since being eliminated by Houston in 2019.
The game was a 1-all tie when Gurrill added reliever Clark Schmidt for a single shot to put Houston on top in the left-field seats. After two at-bats, McCormick sent a sinker from Schmidt into right field to make it 3-1.
