Draft
The Los Angeles Chargers selected Asante Samuel Jr. with the 47th overall pick in the second round of Friday’s 2021 NFL Draft.
Samuel Jr. (5-foot-10, 180 pounds) is the first cornerback selected by the Chargers in the NFL Draft since Craig Mager (83 overall) in 2015.
At Florida State, Samuel Jr. started 23 career games—including the last eight seasons—and was a first-team All-ACC in 2020. He finished his collegiate career with 97 total tackles, 29 passes defended and four interceptions.
Samuel Jr. will join the Chargers secondary which includes cornerback Chris Harris Jr. and a pair of All-Pros in safety and fellow Seminole Darwin James. Los Angeles also re-signed cornerback Michael Davis to free agency.
Samuel Jr.’s father, Asante, played 11 NFL seasons as a cornerback with the Patriots, Eagles, and Falcons. He was a four-time Pro Bowler, first-team All-Pro and a two-time Super Bowl champion.
The Chargers’ next determined pick is ranked 77th overall in the third round.
HOF
When the New England Patriots revealed the three 2022 finalists to be inducted into the team’s Hall of Fame this week, former star cornerback Asante Samuel’s name was absent.
But in the wake of the fraud, Samuel has made sure that his voice is not forgotten.
Mike Wrabel … Logan Mankins … Vince Wilfork … Samuel?
Whether via Twitter or through eye-popping interviews, few are as bitter about his time at Foxborough as ex-Patriot Samuel.
The former cornerback never misses an opportunity to bash his former team. In particular, Samuel likes to target Bill Belichick. Somehow, Samuel thinks that Belichick is a committee of one. (Which, come to think of it, is not such a strange idea.)
