Is playing tonight
Armando Bacot is planning to play against Kansas in Monday’s championship game, after suffering a late injury in Saturday’s national semifinal win over Duke.
The North Carolina center sprained his right ankle in the final minutes of Saturday’s game and was briefly taken off the court with an apparent injury. He managed to return to the game before being fouled out in the final minute of an 81–77 North Carolina win.
On Sunday, head coach Hubert Davies told reporters that an X-ray on Bacot’s ankle came back negative and “he is ready to play tomorrow night.” Bekot will also take part in limited exercises on Sunday.
Ankle
North Carolina star Big Man Armando Bacot plans to play in the national championship game against Kansas on Monday night.
Bacot sprained his right ankle in UNC’s 81-77 win over Duke in the last four on Saturday. He was out of the game less than a minute after the injury and awkwardly progressed in the final minutes of the second half. Tar Heels coach Hubert Davies said Bacot was due to practice on Sunday, but insisted the team’s full workout would be limited. He said the X-rays on Bacot were negative and the swelling was not high.
“He’s ready to play tomorrow night,” Davis said.
If he is limited then Becott is the hardest player for UNC to replace. He is the program’s leading scorer (16.3 ppg) and rebounder (13.1 rpg), and his rebounding total ranks No. 3 in the country. He is ranked No. 8 in defensive rebound percentage (30.2%) and No. 21 in offensive rebound percentage (14.9%), according to KenPom.com.
Becote said on Sunday that he has been treated almost continuously since the end of the game. After the X-ray, he said he spent two hours treating the ankle and then woke up and went down to the pool for rehab on Sunday morning. He said he put the ankle on compression sleeves while working on a homework assignment for a sports facility class on Sunday morning. During a meeting with the media on Sunday afternoon, he said it was his stimulus treatment.
Draft prospect
Becott, Agabaji and Davis are in the title game and all three remain where they are in terms of draft estimates. North Carolina guard Caleb Love has increased his stock after a stellar performance against Duke, but the guard can still be considered the best pick in the first round. Brady Manek has also helped his case with his defensive chops in the title game, and NBA teams will value his shooting enough to get a flight on him. As far as Bacot and Agabaji are concerned, both have raised their profile with their performances in the Final Four. The Kansas forward may have to put in some work in the title game but he is a lottery genius.
The men’s Final Four for the 2022 NCAA Tournament is set to move to New Orleans to compete for the national title with the Kansas Jayhawks, Villanova Wildcats, Duke Blue Devils and North Carolina Tar Heels. The Jayhawks are the lone No. 1 seed to make it to the Final Four in 2022 and will be looking to avenge their 2018 loss to Villanova at this stage. Duke and UNC are meeting for the first time at the NCAA Tournament in Coach Kay’s final season in Durham.
With these events, there is always the possibility of many future NBA players coming to court for the event. Here’s a look at how some players are faring in the Final Four and what they can do to increase their NBA draft stock.
