After spurning the NBA this offseason to return to North Carolina for his junior year, center Armando Bacot made another display of loyalty to the program by getting the Tar Heel logo tattooed to his inner left wrist.

During his first media availability of the season on Wednesday, Bacot revealed that creating a legacy at UNC factored heavily into his decision to postpone his pursuit of professional ball.

“Just looking back at all the alumni that came here [this offseason], I want to one day be able to bring my family back and say I left an impact here and I want to leave a legacy here,” Bacot said. “And that’s one of the biggest things since I’ve been little that I’ve wanted to do. So just being able to come back and get a chance to do that is a blessing and something that I’m ready for.”

As a sophomore, the Richmond, Va. native averaged 12.3 points and 7.8 rebounds per game, leading his team in both categories. He was named third-team All-ACC and first-team All-ACC Tournament for his play in three games – 16.3 points, 10.7 rebounds, 2.7 blocks, and 1.3 steals and shooting 65.5 percent from the floor.

In his two-year career, the 6-foot-10, 240-pound forward has started 60 of 61 games played, with the lone exception being 2021 senior night. His career averages are 10.9 points and 8.0 rebounds, making him the first Tar Heel to average 8.0 rebounds through his sophomore season since Sean May from 2003-05.

“The first year was rough. And then last year there were no fans, so I never really got an opportunity to see fans or tournament games, or even kind of the deep push we made in the ACC tournament. So I haven’t really got the chance to get the full feel.”

Following the offseason departures of Day’Ron Sharpe (NBA) and Walker Kessler (transfer), Bacot is the lone listed center on the roster for the upcoming season. The Richmond, Va. native says he’s excited to be UNC’s man down low and the increased workload that comes as a result.
