Arianne Titmuss has broken the 200m freestyle record against Molly O’Callaghan in one of the best match races of all time at the Australian trials.

Arianne Titmuss and Molly O’Callaghan have both broken the 200m freestyle world record, but the mark now belongs to Titmuss after pipping her club teammate at the Australian swim trials.

In a lightning-fast battle between the reigning world and Olympic champions, the two went stroke for stroke in the final lap with Titmuss clocking 1:52.33 ahead of O’Callaghan’s 1.52.48.

Both swimmers obliterated O’Callaghan’s previous world record of 1:52.85 set at the world titles in Japan last year, where he defeated Titmus.

World records

Titmuss now holds the 200 m and 400 m freestyle world records and is the defending Olympic champion in both events. “Honestly, the world record is a bonus,” she said. “I’m happy to finally be swimming, I know I’m capable of it and it’s exciting to do it in my hometown, in front of a hometown crowd.”

The women’s 200m freestyle final at the Australian Olympic Trials in Brisbane will live long in the memory.

In this event, reigning Olympic champion Ariane Titmuss swam one of her lives to hold off training partner and world record holder Molly O’Callaghan.

The 200 meter freestyle is one of the most tactical races on the swimming program, and there were some clear signs that it was going to be much like some of the earlier races.

The way it played out left the event’s two former world champions – Ian Thorpe and Gian Rooney – on commentary stunned.

Here are the key moments from a memorable four-lap dash at the Brisbane Aquatic Center that will set up an exciting duel in Paris next month.
