One of the most influential and important figures in the history of Japanese professional wrestling has passed away.
Yahoo! Japan reported that Antonio Inoki died at his home on Saturday, October 1. A specific cause of death was not given, but Inoki’s health problems were well known in recent years. In an interview earlier this year, he admitted that he was close to death on several occasions.
News of Inoki’s death came on September 30, 1960, at the age of 17, nearly 62 years after his pro wrestling debut. Another literal and figurative legend in Japanese wrestling history, Inoki’s future tag team partner Shohei Baba made his in-ring. Made his debut on the same card for the Japan Pro Wrestling Alliance (later, known simply as the Japan Alliance).
