During and before the 2018 season, Brown was embroiled in a number of incidents in addition to causing tension within the Steelers organization. This included throwing furniture from the window of his 14th-floor apartment in April, hitting a nearly 22-month-old in the courtyard below and being cited for speeding in excess of 100 mph along a suburban Pittsburgh highway. Brown was later prosecuted for the April incident,  and settled with the child’s family in April 2019. In February 2019, a judge convicted him of reckless driving in a speeding incident, and Brown received a fine.

Brown was born and raised in Miami, Florida, and attended Miami Norland High School, where he starred in both football and track. He played college football at Central Michigan University, where he earned All-America honors in 2008 and 2009. Brown was drafted by the Pittsburgh Steelers in the sixth round of the 2010 NFL Draft. Therefore, in 2019, Brown was traded to the Oakland Raiders, making him the highest paid receiver in the league. He was released before appearing in regular season games after various off-field incidents. Brown signed with the New England Patriots shortly thereafter but was released after playing one game. Brown then re-emerged during the 2020 regular season, signing with the Buccaneers after serving an eight-game suspension.
