Anthony Johnson: Passed away| Cancer| What happened to
Anthony Kevoa Johnso (March 6, 1984 – November 13, 2022) was an American mixed martial artist. He spent most of his career competing for the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC), where he was a multiple-time title challenger before ending his career with singles fights with Bellator MMA. He fought in the welterweight and light heavyweight divisions. He was known by his nickname Rumble, which was given to him because of his one-punch knockout power.
Passed away
Former MMA fighter Anthony “Rumble” Johnson died Sunday after a year of illness, a Bellator spokesman told the Associated Press. He was 38 years old.
According to Kevin Iole of Yahoo Sports, “The cause of death was organ failure due to non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma and hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis, a rare disorder of the immune system.”
Several current and former MMA fighters expressed their condolences on Twitter after receiving the news:
“He was always a great kid,” said UFC president Dana White, per Iole. “He was always into funny fights, and he had that one-punch KO power that a lot of people never had. He was a nice guy. I send my condolences to his family.”
Cancer
According to Yahoo! Sports, Johnson was suffering from a cancer known as non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma and hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis, an auto-immune disease. He passed away due to organ failure after a long battle with these diseases.

Both conditions involve uncontrolled production of white blood cells, while hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH) is a rare condition where those cells build up in the spleen and liver, damaging organs and interfering with many other functions in the body. HLH is most commonly seen in infants and children, but it can also be caused by cancer.
According to Johnson’s close friend and former UFC welterweight champion Kamaru Usman, Anthony did not like to share details of his illness.
Osman told Yahoo! Play. “Chadwick kept his issue private and we were all very shocked and surprised [when he died in 2020]. Rumble would tell you these irreverent stories, and that he was doing dialysis on his kidneys, but he never really told you the whole lot of what was going on. He didn’t want to be treated differently. He didn’t want people to see him losing all this weight and going through these situations and treating him differently because of what was going on.
The MMA community was saddened to hear of the passing of “Rumble”, who built a reputation as one of the most dangerous knockout performers during his decade at the top of the sport. After battling weight issues for years as a welterweight and middleweight, Johnson eventually found his place in the UFC’s 205-pound division, where he challenged for the title twice, losing both times to Daniel Cormier.

On May 17, Johnson posted on Instagram that he had received good news from his doctor, saying that there had been “huge improvements”.

Rest easy my brother. For a man who struck fear into the hearts of so many, Anthony Johnson was a caring man. From random text to check in while lost. What a person he was, Rumble will be missed. Sometimes life doesn’t seem fair.
