Anthony DeVante Edwards (born August 5, 2001) is an American professional basketball player for the Minnesota Timberwolves of the National Basketball Association (NBA). A shooting guard, he played college basketball for the Georgia Bulldogs.

Edwards ended his high school career at Holy Spirit Preparatory School in his hometown of Atlanta, where he was unanimously named a five-star recruit and one of the best players in the 2019 class by leading recruiting services. As a senior, he earned McDonald’s All-American and USA Today All-USA First Team honors. He committed to playing college basketball for Georgia, becoming the most Herald recruit to do so, and was named SEC Freshman of the Year after his freshman season with the team. He was selected with the first overall pick by the Minnesota Timberwolves in the 2020 NBA Draft.

The Minnesota Timberwolves are having a relatively good season, all things considered. Despite a young roster and low expectations, they are in the middle of a fierce playoff race to finish eighth in the Western Conference. Edwards said after the game that he was fine. We will see if his name appears in the injury report on Tuesday. Wolves are 23-23 and have won three of the last four matches. We don’t know if it’s anything serious right now. Chances are T-Wolf will list Edwards as a suspect or kick him out for Tuesday versus the Blazers. If that’s the case and Edwards sits, it should mean more use for D’Angelo Russell and Carl-Anthony Towns. Jaylen Novell will also line up for more minutes off the bench and could actually start in Edwards’ place. Jaden McDaniels and Malik Beasley are also candidates to step up if Edwards misses any time.

But the victory over the best team in the Eastern Conference came to a halt after Anthony Edwards was injured in the closing minutes. The Timberwolves were holding a major lead when Edwards took a knee with Brooklyn’s Ron Sharpe. While Chris Finch had his reserves ready to test the game, Edwards limped on the bench and had to be carried off the court. Speaking to reporters after the game, Finch said Edwards told him his leg should be fine but it remains to be seen whether his injury will force him to lose time. Injuries clouded what should have been a celebratory night for the Timberwolves. Minnesota came into the game in each of the last nine games outscoring its opponent in the first quarter, and D’Angelo Russell played his part to keep the streak alive on Sunday.
