Growth spurt
Minnesota Timberwolves head coach Chris Finch told the Minneapolis Star Tribune that Anthony Edwards has grown since being drafted last year.
The first pick of the 2020 draft, Anthony Edwards, told Finch that his height has increased by about two inches, or five centimeters. At the time he was picked up by the Timberwolves, Edwards was 1.93m. Now, he is around 1.98 meters tall.
“It’s a very ant thing,” said Finch. “He told me, ‘Don’t let me get to 6-6 (1.98m) or else I’ll be Michael Jordan.'”
High school rank
Edwards ended his high school career at Holy Spirit Preparatory School in his hometown of Atlanta, where he was unanimously named a five-star recruit and one of the best players in the 2019 class by leading recruiting services. As a senior, he earned McDonald’s All-American and USA Today All-USA First Team honors. He committed to playing college basketball for Georgia, becoming the most Herald recruit to do so, and was named SEC Freshman of the Year after his freshman season with the team. He was selected with the first overall pick by the Minnesota Timberwolves in the 2020 NBA Draft.
Shoe deal
This year has been great for Anthony Edwards.
First, the Minnesota Timberwolves made him the No. 1 overall pick in the 2020 NBA Draft and a franchise cornerstone. Now, Adidas is reportedly welcoming him into the family.
On Sunday, Shams Charaniya of The Athletic & Stadium reported that Edwards signed a shoe endorsement deal with Adidas after playing just two games in his rookie season.
Edwards wasted little time in impressing in his first two games and averaged 16.5 points, 2.5 assists, 2.5 rebounds and 1.0 steals in one night, shooting 54.2 percent from the field and 37.5 percent from three-point range.
Although this is clearly a small sample size, there were some questions about their outdoor shooting capability in the draft. Timberwolves fans were certainly pleased to see him connect at 2-of-3 in Saturday’s win over the Utah Jazz.
Most importantly, Minnesota is set for a 2-0 start and has a talented youth core with Edwards, Karl-Anthony Towns and D’Angelo Russell.
Edwards’ deal comes at a time when there was some uncertainty about how many of the 2020 rookies would sign contracts with major shoe companies. Catalyst Sports & Media CEO Happy Walters told Sportico in November that there was not much money available to the rookies from shoe companies.
In fact, he said that Nike would not sign any rookie before January.
Adidas clearly thought Edwards was worth the investment as No. 1 overall.
