On June 16, 2007, it was announced by HBO boxer After Dark announcer Larry Merchant that Dirrell was currently undergoing chemotherapy for non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. After completing chemotherapy in 2008, he was again cleared for boxing.

On January 28, 2008, Dirrell was held overnight in a Flint City lockup on suspicion of armed robbery. However, no charges were ever filed. Dirrell’s grandfather claims that Dirrell was about to undergo chemotherapy for non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma when the robbery took place.

After the fight stopped, Dirrell’s trainer and uncle Leon Lawson approached Uzcategui and punched him with a sucker before fleeing the scene.

In a preliminary examination on Friday, June 2, a judge in Prince George’s County District Court dismissed all felony assault charges against Leon Lawson Jr., who turned himself in to Maryland police this week.

Lawson Jr. once faced 25 years in prison and a fine of $2,500 for first-degree assault and 10 years for second-degree assault.

Now, the charges have been reduced to a single count of misdemeanor assault.

Lawson Jr.’s attorney, Frank Jay Manley, said his office is “delighted by the news and is looking forward to its client’s hearing date of August 16”.

Minutes after Dirrell was dropped on Saturday, May 20 by an illegal strike to end the eighth round, his family entered the ring and reacted with punches of their own.

Dirrell’s brothers, Anthony and Willie, were stopped near ringside, while Lawson Jr. – Dirrell’s uncle and trainer – entered the ring to punch Venezuela’s Uzcategui with a left hook.
