Originally, he planned to enter the University of Louisville, but as a result of the basketball sex scandal of 2015 at the university and its involvement in the 2017–18 NCAA Division I men’s basketball corruption scandal, he ultimately decommitted from Louisville, saying that he was most interested in the University.

Dunk Contest:

On Sunday, Portland Trail Blazers guard Anfernee Simons was crowned the NBA Slam Dunk Contest winner after narrowly beating New York Knicks rookie Obi Toppin in the final round.

In the end, the final came down to Simons vs. Toppin, and the judges chose Simons by a 3-2 vote to make him the first Trail Blazer to win the Slam Dunk Contest. His winning dunk was a self-lob where he attempted to kiss the rim but didn’t quite reach his target.

Among the many question marks on this Portland Trail Blazers roster, second-year guard Anfernee Simons may be the most enigmatic of them all.

Despite brimming with offensive potential, there’s uncertainty as to if Simons is better suited as an off-ball two-guard, or if he’s capable of quarterbacking the Blazers’ second unit.

A closer look at some of the drills the two were pushing through were reflective of that of a pure point guard. One drill caught my eye, with Simons taking a right-side pick-and-roll, before swinging passes across the court with his right hand.

Among a few noteworthy others: fadeaway buckets in the mid-post, fighting through screen drills, and non-dominant hand passes across the shoulder. It’s the type of pass Simons would make if, say, he ran a ball-screen to his left, and needed to take advantage of a quick double team.
