Illness

MELBOURNE (AFP) – Annette Kontaveit says reaching her first Grand Slam quarter-final on Monday helps break the heartbreak of pulling out of the US Open with an illness that torpedoed her 2019 season and required surgery.

The 24-year-old became the first Estonian woman to reach the last eight in Melbourne after beating Polish teenager Inga Swietek 6-7 (4/7), 7-5, 7-5 in 2 hours and 42 minutes.

The 28th seed will next take on fourth seed Simona Halep, one of the top contenders for the title.

Kontaveit has faced some months of turmoil, having been forced to pull out of her third-round clash with Belinda Bencic in New York after being unwell from a viral illness.

He later required surgery and did not play any matches for the rest of the last year.

“It was really tough to retire at the Grand Slam. It was really tough the few months after that,” he said after taking a late charge from 18-year-old Sweetek.

“But I’m so glad I’m through it now. I started training in mid-November, and it’s only getting (better) uphill from there,” Kontaveit added with a smile.

The Estonian’s return to full form and fitness was proof of this when he defeated Swiss sixth seed Bencic 6-0, 6-1 in the third round in Melbourne.

Her British coach Nigel Sears says the forced exit at the US Open led to some surprising momentum stops at Flushing Meadows, where she was seeded 21st.

“(He) got an internal infection that got out of control very quickly,” he said at the Australian Open.

“I suddenly got a call early this morning that she was going to the hospital, she was hospitalized in New York for a week and then she had surgery to remove an abscess.

“She couldn’t do anything for three or four months, lost a lot of weight. It was extremely frustrating.”
