Andrew Gregory Dalton (born October 29, 1987) nicknamed “The Red Rifle” is an American football quarterback for the New Orleans Saints of the National Football League (NFL). Dalton was drafted by the Cincinnati Bengals in 2011. Dalton has also played for the Dallas Cowboys and Chicago Bears. He played college football at TCU, where he became the school leader in quarterback victories and won the 2011 Rose Bowl.

Nickname
However, the gunslinger designation for quarterback is usually reserved for someone who throws the ball deep. On the other hand, the rifle is known for its accuracy. And while Dalton isn’t the most accurate quarterback in the world, his small yards per effort make the rifle moniker fit.
The surname also has a nice alliteration.
Does Andy Dalton like the nickname Red Rifle?
He doesn’t necessarily hate it, but his comments in 2011 made it clear that he didn’t like it either.
Speaking with NFL Total Access, Dalton didn’t seem too happy with the name he was given.
“It’s fine. It looks like everyone’s going to find a nickname for my hair with ‘red’ or something. So, Red Rifle is fine,” he said.
Asked what he wanted to be called, Dalton simply replied, “Andy. Andy works. It’s just Andy.”
Sometimes people confuse the surname with something completely different. In 2017, while working at a Bengals-Steelers game, CBS announcer Jim Nantz called Dalton “The Red Rocket.” Nantz’s partner, Tony Romo, couldn’t help but laugh.
What about his beef with JJ? Watt?
While Dalton initially said that he didn’t like the nickname, he definitely stuck to it in 2015.
The Bengals lost a game to the Texans, and in a postgame interview J.J. Watt took a shot (pun intended) at Dalton’s nickname. Watt said that the Texans’ goal in that game was to “get out of here and make the Red Rifle look like the Red Ryder BB Gun.”
Dalton objected to those comments and made a very strong statement.
“It’s disappointing for one of the best players in this league to come out and say something like that,” Dalton said. “That’s all I’m going to say about it. I think JJ is a good player. But for him to be one of the best in this league and to show that honesty, it shows that he What is it about, which is disappointing.”

Dalton played his first nine seasons for the Cincinnati Bengals, which picked him in the second round of the 2011 NFL Draft.[2] In a three-time Pro Bowl selection with Cincinnati, he led the team for five consecutive playoff appearances from 2011 to 2015. led, making him the only quarterback in the franchise to do so. Veteran quarterback Andy Dalton is set to join the fourth team of his career in 2022.
The Saints are reportedly signing Dalton to a one-year contract to serve as a backup for Jameis Winston in New Orleans, as first reported by ESPN’s Adam Schefter. The deal would pay the 34-year-old Dalton up to $6 million, with $3 million guaranteed.
Deal
A veteran of 11 years, Dalton will likely slot into the Saints quarterback room as a veteran backup when the franchise re-signed Winston to a two-year deal earlier this offseason. According to New Orleans coach Dennis Allen, the utility player will relinquish most of his responsibilities under the Tessom Hill center and focus on playing tight end in 2022.
Dalton signed a one-year, $10 million contract with the Bears in March 2021 and the organization said he would be a starter in the early stages of the off-season. That changed when Chicago traded former Ohio State quarterback Justin Fields to the NFL draft.
