Monkey

Despite having a rich cricketing history, the reputation and integrity of Australian cricket and its players has been tested many times. During India’s tour of Australia in 2008, former Australian cricketer Andrew Symonds and India’s iconic spinner Harbhajan Singh were involved in the infamous ‘monkeygate’ controversy. It all happened in the Sydney Test match between India and hosts Australia when the former all-rounder accused legendary spinner Harbhajan of calling him a “monkey”.
Symonds had previously revealed that his life had gotten “quite fast” after the “Monkeygate” scandal. The infamous controversy had even prompted Australia’s Symonds to abuse alcohol. The long running lineup of former Indian and Australian cricketers is considered one of the controversial moments of Symonds’ international career.
Speaking to the Australian Broadcasting Corporation, the former Australian all-rounder said that he had started drinking heavily after the Monkeygate controversy. “That was my downhill slide from that moment on. I started drinking heavily as a result and my life began to dissolve around me and felt the pressure and weight of dragging those of my teammates into the pan of this cesspit,” Symonds said. That we’ve never gotten to a point where we feel guilty.
India’s Harbhajan was banned for three matches after the incident. However, the three-match ban was later lifted after the Indian team threatened to pull out of the tour. Looks like they deserved to be involved,” Symonds was quoted as saying.

Andrew Symonds is one of the best players to have made his Test debut on an overseas tour. In 2004, Symonds made his Test debut against Sri Lanka. Cricket pundits questioned his selection in the team as he replaced Simon Katich, who had recently scored a century in the previous series. Symonds’ illustrious cricket career got off to a rough start, as he failed to score more than 25 runs in his first four matches. In 2005, he returned to the team and quickly established himself as a valuable member. In 2008, he played his last Test match against South Africa.

Before making his Test debut, Symonds had established himself as an ODI cricketer. In 1998, he made his ODI debut (six years before his Test debut). Despite a slow start in international cricket, he was selected by Cricket Australia for the 2003 World Cup squad, when he announced his arrival in One Day International cricket.

Symonds’ match-winning performance in the 2003 World Cup against Pakistan cemented his place in the ODI squad for years to come. Andrew Symonds last played an ODI against Pakistan in 2009. He scored 5088 runs in 198 One Day Internationals for Australia and took 133 wickets.

Symonds scored 337 runs in 14 Twenty20 Internationals for Australia at an average of 48.14 and a strike rate of 169. In the shortest format of the game, he scored two fifties.
