She is the 2021 CS Nebelhorn Trophy champion, 2021 CS Lombardia Trophy champion and a two-time US national champion (2019, 2020). Team USA’s youngest figure skater Alyssa Liu topped the final group of skaters in the women’s free skate finals on Thursday morning after a spectacular performance.

Born on August 8, 2005 in Clovis, California, Liu is the eldest of five children. Her father, Arthur Liu, is a lawyer from a mountain village in Sichuan, China. He attended an elite high school in Zhongxian, Chongqing, and studied English literature at Guangzhou’s Southwest Teachers University, also known as Southwest Normal University. During college, he became interested in political activism and as an undergraduate in the late 1980s, he reportedly organized pro-democracy demonstrations in the port city.
Following the events of the 1989 protests in Tiananmen Square, he reportedly led traffic-blocking demonstrations in Guangzhou which, according to Sports Illustrated, placed him on a list of wanted students by the Chinese government.
Soon after, Liu arrived in Oakland at the age of 25, moving to America. He earned income from working in a Chinese restaurant and used it to fund his law degree at the University of California – he currently operates a firm in Oakland.

There is no known information about Alyssa Liu’s biological mother. Liu’s babies were born via in vitro fertilization and were born to surrogate mothers – the athlete had a different egg donor and was a surrogate for the rest of her siblings.
