Health and safety
Ahead of the Eastern Conference Finals, the Celtics suffered some major setbacks.
Hours before the series opener, it was announced that starting center Al Horford had entered the league’s COVID-19 health and safety protocols. Horford has since been cleared for Game 2.
Horford, 35, has turned back the clock during the 2022 NBA playoffs, posting an average of 13.0 points, 9.4 rebounds and 3.4 assists in .524/.451/.833 shooting splits through Boston’s first 11 playoff games. An old 30-point performance in Game 4 of the Eastern Conference Semifinals played a big role in the Celtics progressing to the East Finals.
When will Horford be able to return to the floor? Here’s everything you need to know about his condition and the health and safety protocols of the NBA.
Does have covid
Celtics center Al Horford is set to reach his Eastern Conference final on Thursday after being sidelined for Game 1 against the Heat due to health and safety protocols.
Boston announced that Horford has been cleared to play, nearly two hours after the 35-year-old was listed as a suspect. Seasoned big man and defensive player of the year Marcus Smart (ft) was unavailable for the club’s 118-107 loss in Miami on Tuesday; Smart is currently listed as Potential.
Horford’s presence has been crucial to the Celtics throughout the playoffs, with the former All-Star making the move with several big plays at both ends of the floor. He will be expected to step back in that role against Bam Adebayo and a physical Heat defense
How long is out
Hours before Game 1 of the Celtics-heated Eastern Conference Finals, Boston announced that starting center Al Horford had entered health and safety protocols and would miss Tuesday night’s game.
The announcement came as a surprise after Horford highlighted the team’s practices leading up to Game 1 in a Twitter video on Tuesday afternoon. It is Horford’s first playoff absence this season.
According to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, Horford is expected to remain in health and safety protocol through Thursday night’s Game 2. Grant Williams is expected to start in place of Horford.
Horford’s absence leaves Boston without two starts in Game 1, as Marcus Smart will also be sidelined by a leg sprain against the Bucks in the second round.
Good news for the Celtics, with center Robert Williams returning for Game 1 after missing the last four games due to a pain in his left knee.
