Death cause
The cause of death of former Michigan State men’s basketball star Adrian Payne has been announced.
Former Spartans basketball star Payne has died at the age of 31. On Monday afternoon, the Orange County Sheriff’s Office in Orlando, Florida released details of what had happened.
Payne was killed in a drive-by shooting in Florida on the morning of Monday, May 9, according to a police report. Payne was pronounced dead at a local hospital, while the alleged shooter has been arrested.
Michigan State basketball reporter Chris Solari tweeted the full police report Monday afternoon.
Cause of death
Adrian Payne, a veteran who starred at Michigan State and played four seasons in the NBA, died Monday at the age of 31.

The Orange County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that Payne died as a result of a shooting that occurred at 1:30 p.m. in Florida. Payne was shot in a townhome community in the Icahn Landing neighborhood. He was taken to the hospital but was declared brought.
The death of Adrian Payne – the shooter, Lawrence Dority – Lawrence Dority, 29, stayed at the scene and was then taken to the sheriff’s office for questioning. He was arrested on a warrant of first degree murder and taken to the Orange County Jail.
The suspected shooter, 29-year-old Lawrence Dority, remained at the scene and co-operated with officers. Dority was arrested on charges of first-degree murder.
The Ohio native played at Michigan State under Tom Izzo from 2010–14. Payne was a second-team All Big Ten in his junior and senior seasons. During his final campaign with the Spartans, he entered the season on the Wooden and Naismith Award watch-lists, averaging 16.4 points and 7.3 rebounds per game.
Payne and Michigan State won Big Ten tournament titles in 2012 and 2014.
The former Spartan gained national fame when he befriended Lacey Holsworth, a young girl who inspired the Michigan State basketball team before being diagnosed with nervous system cancer at the age of eight in 2014.
