American hockey player Adam Johnson, who appeared in 13 NHL games with the Pittsburgh Penguins, has died after a “freak accident” during a game in England on Saturday, his club said.
The 29-year-old Minnesota native was playing for the Nottingham Panthers in a Challenge Cup game against the Sheffield Steelers when he suffered a concussion during the second period of the game at Sheffield’s Utilita Arena.
“Nottingham Panthers are very sad to announce that Adam Johnson has tragically died following a freak accident during last night’s game at Sheffield Wednesday,” the team said on Sunday morning.
“The Panthers would like to send our thoughts and condolences to Adam’s family, his partner and all of his friends at this extremely difficult time. Everyone at the club including the players, staff, management and ownership is heartbroken by the news of Adam’s passing.

The Nottingham Panthers, who play in England’s Elite Ice Hockey League (EIHL), announced Sunday that the organization was “saddened by the news of Adam’s passing.”
Officials stopped the Panthers’ game against the Sheffield Steelers on Saturday after Johnson was involved in an on-ice confrontation during the second period. Johnson received emergency treatment on the ice, and the players eventually returned to the locker room after being taken to Sheffield Northern General Hospital.
Around 8,000 fans at Sheffield’s Utilita Arena were asked to leave the building as the Panthers declared a “major medical emergency”.
