Duvall attended the University of Louisville and played college baseball there. He was selected by the San Francisco Giants in the 11th round of the 2010 MLB draft, and made his MLB debut in 2014. Duvall sustained his injury while trying to make a play on a fly ball hit by Detroit first baseman Spencer Torkelson, in which his glove seemed to get stuck in the grass. Duvall had been having a tremendous start to his Red Sox career before this setback.
