The Case for Aaron Donald as the Greatest Defensive Player of All Time
In our quest to quantify the three-time Defensive Player of the Year Award winner’s singular greatness, here’s what we discovered to back up our case.
8th of September, 2022, CONOR ORRSEP
Dante Scarnecchia, who has coached in the NFL for 36 years, may be the greatest offensive line coach in NFL history.
But, as he walked into his positional meeting room before the Patriots faced the Rams in Super Bowl LIII, there was still a palpable sense of unease about the elephant in the room: how on earth was he going to plan for Aaron Donald?
Donald had 20.5 sacks and 41 quarterback hits that season.
Weight and height

Aaron Donald stands at 6-1 (1.85m), which is an ideal height for a defensive tackle because players his size should not be taller than 6-3. (1.91m).
The shorter his stature, the easier it is to get under the offensive line.
What is Aaron Donald’s weight?
Donald weighs 280 pounds (127 kilogrammes), making him a light player in comparison to the average weight of defensive tackles, who weigh around 310 pounds (140 kg).
Bench press
Donald’s 40-yard dash time of 4.68 seconds ranks him fifth among defensive linemen, but NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport believes it was equally as impressive as Jadeveon Clowney’s time of 4.53 seconds:
Combine his freakish burst with incredible strength—his 35 bench press reps were second-best among defensive linemen—and you have a frightening presence in the middle.
CBS Sports ranks Donald as the second-best defensive tackle prospect in the draught, but his frame is a red flag, according to Rob Rang.
Off the line of scrimmage, his explosiveness will certainly help, but if he can’t win his matchup off the snap, he can be stonewalled:
When Donald’s burst is contained, he performs similarly to most undersized pass-rushers.
