Vault

Katie Moon and Nina Kennedy will forever be linked together in track and field lore, ever since they mutually agreed to share the pole vault gold medal at the 2023 World Athletics Championships in Budapest, Hungary.

This time, in the women’s Olympic pole vault at the Stade de France, Kennedy bested her friendly rival to win the gold medal with a thrilling jump of 4.90 m/16-1. The 27-year-old Australian attacked the cross bar with the tenacity of a boxing kangaroo. Kennedy was absolutely delighted with this successful jump. He didn’t control his emotions, waved his fists and celebrated demonstratively.

Moon was unable to equal Kennedy’s top bar, but added Olympic silver to her gold medal haul from the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020. The 33-year-old pole vaulter from Ohio — who trains in Georgia and is moving to Tulsa — said she was most satisfied with the result considering overcoming morning sickness and other recent setbacks. She has struggled with injuries this season and has not been in top form physically.

Olympics

Katie Moon added to Team USA’s medal tally with a silver medal in the women’s pole vault Tuesday at the Stade de France venue of the Paris Olympics. In her final successful attempt to reach the podium, Moon cleared 15 feet, 11 inches.

Australia’s Nina Kennedy won the gold medal (16 feet, ¾ inches), while Canada’s Elisha Newman won the bronze medal.

Moon cleared her first four vaults without any failed attempts, making her one of only two competitors to do so, along with Switzerland’s Angelika Moser.

For Moon, this marks two consecutive Olympic medals in this event. She won a gold medal at the Tokyo Games with a vault of 16 feet, ¾ inches and finished tied for first with a vault of the same height at the 2023 World Championships in Budapest. She is now the second Team USA women’s pole vaulter to earn multiple Olympic medals, joining Jennifer Suhr, who won silver at the 2008 Beijing Games and gold at the 2012 Games in London.
