Tracy Cortez moved up the weight in an unusual way for her UFC main event.
Needing to lose nearly half a pound to make weight at 126 pounds for her flyweight bout against Rose Namajunas, Cortez cut off a handful of her hair.
It worked, as on Friday he officially weighed 126 pounds. After this, Cortez posed in front of the camera with her hair clipped in her hand.
“What was it, .5 (pounds)?” he later told ESPN. “I said, ‘No hesitation. We’ll do whatever it takes. This is a big opportunity.'”
Cortez, 30, and her new bob will face Namajunas in the headliner Saturday night in Denver. Namajunas, who came into Friday weighing in at 124.75 pounds, was originally scheduled to fight Macy Barber, but Barber pulled out due to ongoing health issues.
Brother
Tracy Cortez had three siblings but she lost her eldest brother in 2011. Jose Cortez himself was an MMA fighter and had dreams of competing in the UFC before being diagnosed with germ-cell cancer around 2008. As a result, he had to abandon his studies. Work. He died in 2011 after battling the condition for three years.
The death of her brother had a huge impact on Cortez and she began to struggle with depression because of it. Interestingly, it was his late brother who introduced him to MMA. When she was 14, Cortez began training by watching her brother. To pay tribute to Jose Cortez, the UFC flyweight got a tattoo of his brother wearing a UFC T-shirt on his arm.
