Things were not going well for Coco Gauff against Emma Navarro on Center Court, not good at all and she kept looking to her guest box for help from her coaches. One, Brad Gilbert, would stand up and point, and they would talk back and forth, but no solution would come.
Gauff has yet to advance past the fourth round at Wimbledon, and she exited at that stage again on Sunday, losing 6-4, 6-3 to Navarro in an all-American matchup.
“We had a game plan and I felt it wasn’t working. I don’t always ask for advice out of the box, but today was one of those rare moments where I felt I didn’t have the solution,” said Gauff, the reigning US Open champion and No. 2 seed at the All England Club. “I don’t want to say I had nothing, because I feel like I was able to bring something. There was a lot going on mentally today. I felt like I wanted more direction.”
Hers was the latest in a series of top women’s departures from the Wimbledon bracket this year: No. 1 Iga Swiatek lost on Saturday, No. 3 Aryna Sabalenka withdrew with an injured shoulder before playing a match and No. 6 Marketa Vondrousova finished last. The year’s champion, was defeated in the first round.
Only two of the top 10 women remain: 2022 champion Elena Rybakina, ranked No. 4, and recent French Open runner-up Jasmine Paolini, ranked No. 7, who will next face Navarro. Rybakina plays her fourth-round match on Monday, while Paolini advanced to Sunday when Madison Keys withdrew due to injury.
