Injury update
The Miami Heat suffered another injury blow when it was announced Friday that guard Dru Smith will miss the remainder of the season.
Smith suffered a third-degree knee sprain in Wednesday’s win against the Cleveland Cavaliers. Smith was considered one of the backup point guards behind Kyle Lowry.
Dru Smith averaged 4.3 points, 1.6 rebounds and 1.6 assists. A former developmental player in the G League, he worked his way into the rotation this season.
The injury occurred in the first half when Smith was contesting a shot in front of the Cavs’ bench. He got down awkwardly before being taken to the locker room.
After the game, Heat coach Erik Spoelstra blamed the Cavs’ court construction for the injury. There is a small depression between the floor and the bench.
“It’s a dangerous floor. I don’t know the history of injuries here, but we’ve had a little bit of a scare over the years with guys closing in on that corner,” Spoelstra said. “Thankfully, no one was injured before, but it’s an accident waiting to happen. You take off and suddenly you’re going down a cliff. It’s very dangerous. As soon as he stopped at the bottom , We all knew that was probably what happened.”

Highlights
Kyle Lowry is the only true point guard left on Erik Spoelstra’s roster with the Heat following the results of an MRI scan taken in New York before Friday night’s game against the New York Knicks at Madison Square Garden.
Guard Duncan Robinson, who was ruled out of Friday’s game with a sprained right thumb, also was scanned Friday. He is listed as day-to-day, with the Heat’s next game coming on Saturday at the end of a five-game trip against the Brooklyn Nets.
Robinson was starting in place of Tyler Herro, who was sidelined with a Grade 2 ankle sprain suffered in a November 8 road win over the Memphis Grizzlies.
Herro was playing as the primary ballhandler before his injury. Now, with Smith out, Josh Richardson, a career combo guard, is likely to play more often at point guard.
