Melbourne AFL coach Simon Goodwin has spoken out about three years of allegations of illegal drug use and strongly denied the claims.

However, the premiership winner made a surprise statement about troubled star Clayton Oliver, also revealing he has not spoken to Joel Smith after the Demons player was suspended for alleged cocaine use.

Goodwin has come under criticism after claims were made about a drinking session involving the coach and several players at the Hotel Sorrento in 2020.

Drugs

Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin has revealed he has yet to speak to Joel Smith after the forward tested positive for a banned drug, but has offered his support to embattled midfielder Clayton Oliver.

Smith was provisionally suspended after testing positive for cocaine on match day following Round 23, with his case now being investigated by the AFL’s integrity unit.

In a pre-recorded interview with SEN, Goodwin said he and Smith have not spoken since the revelation.

Personal issues

‘Disparate behavioral issues’: Pert Oliver, Smith, speaks on culture. Melbourne chief executive Gary Peart is adamant that recent off-field incidents involving star midfielder Clayton Oliver and forward Joel Smith are “isolated behavioral issues” and do not reflect the club’s wider culture.
