Issues
Melbourne star Clayton Oliver has revealed he has ADHD, saying the medication he takes for the condition caused him to go to hospital earlier this month. Oliver was taken to Western Health’s Footscray Hospital after he suffered a seizure at the home of teammate Joel Smith.
Behaviour
Melbourne have suspended star midfielder Clayton Oliver and forward Joel Smith on notice as Demons CEO Gary Peart defended the overall culture at the club.
Oliver, who is contracted until 2030, has been told he needs to behave himself off the field if he wants to remain a part of the program long-term.
Smith, who is on provisional suspension after returning a positive drug test for cocaine, knows the club could ban him once he goes through the AFL’s anti-doping process and receives a finding.
In a letter to members, Peart clarified that the club believed the recent behavioral issues were isolated incidents and not symptomatic of a wider cultural problem.
They made it clear that Oliver would be dropped from the program if he did not meet club leaders’ expectations amid concerns about his actions in the final part of the 2023 season.
What did do
Melbourne star Clayton Oliver has blamed a combination of ADHD medications, lack of sleep due to stress and a missed first day at the gym for the shock that sent him to hospital earlier this month.
Brownlow
A career-best season from the Melbourne ball magnet.
Taking out the Keith ‘Blue’ Truscott Memorial Trophy for the third time, and finishing third in the Brownlow count.
His numbers make him one of the top players in the competition – he averaged 31.6 disposals a game (17.4 in the competition). Key to Demons premiership winning side.
