Parents kidnapped
Colombia’s president says Diaz’s mother has been saved, but the search for her missing father continues.
The mother of Liverpool’s Colombian winger Luis Diaz has been rescued from kidnappers, but the search for his father continues, Colombia President Gustavo Petro said.
Petro posted on X, formerly known as Twitter, on Saturday that Diaz’s mother had been rescued in Barrancas in the northern part of the country.
“We are continuing to search for the father,” Petro said.
Parents
News outlets in Colombia have reported that on Saturday afternoon (local time), Luis Manuel Diaz and Silenis Marulanda were stopped by kidnappers as they headed towards their home neighborhood of Los Olivos in the city of Barrancas – where the Liverpool player is based.
Semana said that armed men riding a motorcycle stopped his vehicle. However, another version of events claimed that Diaz’s parents were watching a game when kidnappers came and took them away.
Colonel Giovanni Cristancho, director of the Gaula branch of the Colombian police, which handles kidnapping extortion and hostage rescue, was immediately dispatched to take charge of the situation.
Dad
Liverpool have confirmed an “ongoing situation” involving Luis Diaz’s family amid reports the forward’s parents were kidnapped in Colombia. It has since been confirmed that his mother has been rescued but his father is missing.
Diaz was then left out of the Liverpool squad to face Nottingham Forest on Sunday.
“Liverpool Football Club can confirm that it is aware of the current situation involving the family of Luis Diaz in Colombia,” a club statement read.
“It is our fervent hope that the matter will be resolved safely and at the earliest possible opportunity. “In the meantime, the player’s welfare remains our immediate priority.”
Colombia’s President Gustavo Petro said: “Luis Diaz’s mother has been rescued in an operation in Barrancas, we are continuing the search for the father.”
Father
Luis Diaz’s father has reportedly been saved from kidnapping during a shootout that left two of his captors dead, hours after the footballer’s mother was freed from her tormentor.
The search for Luis Manuel Diaz was underway after Silenis Marulanda was rescued after being chased by police following the kidnapping of the Liverpool star’s parents near their home in the city of Barrancas in Colombia’s Caribbean region on Saturday afternoon.
