Ice hockey player Adam Johnson has died after a “freak accident” during the Nottingham Panthers’ Challenge Cup match with Sheffield Steelers on Saturday night.
The 29-year-old American was reportedly slashed in the neck during the second period of the game at Sheffield’s Utilita Arena.
Nottingham Panthers said on Sunday morning: “Nottingham Panthers are truly saddened to announce that he has tragically died following a freak accident during last night’s game at Sheffield Wednesday.”

Former NHL player Adam Johnson died after a “freak accident” on the ice in Britain on Saturday, as fans were urged to evacuate the building following the bizarre accident.
Johnson, a forward for the Nottingham Panthers of the Elite Ice Hockey League (EIHL), was involved in an on-ice collision midway through the second period against the Sheffield Steelers.
“Adam, our No. 47, was not only an outstanding ice hockey player, but also a great teammate and an incredible person who had his entire life ahead of him,” the Panthers said in a statement. “The club will miss him greatly and will never forget him.”
