Mary Lou Retton (born January 24, 1968) is an American retired gymnast. At the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, he won the gold medal in the individual all-around competition, as well as two silver medals and two bronze medals. His performances made him one of the most popular athletes in the United States.
Fundraiser
American gymnast icon Mary Lou Retton is “fighting for her life,” McKenna Kelly, one of Retton’s four daughters, revealed Tuesday.
“My amazing mom, Mary Lou, has a very rare form of pneumonia,” Kelly wrote on Spotfund, an online fundraiser raising donations for Rayton’s medical expenses. “He is not able to breathe on his own. He has been in the ICU for over a week. Out of respect for him and his privacy, I will not disclose all the details. However, I will point out that he is not insured. “
Retton achieved international fame after becoming the first American woman to win a gold medal in the all-around competition during the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles. This accomplishment not only put him on the front of the Wheaties box, but captured the hearts of many Americans.
“Thank you for having dreams, goals in life and the ability to know my strengths! I love gymnastics and kindness because of you!” wrote one person who donated to Retton’s fund. The fundraiser has surpassed its $50,000 goal, raising more than $72,000 as of Tuesday evening.
Insurance
Kelly began a fundraising campaign on Retton’s behalf for medical expenses. Kelly wrote that Retton does not currently have medical insurance.
Uninsured
Mary Lou Retton, the gold medal-winning gymnast at the 1984 Summer Olympics, is currently in the ICU unit at a hospital in Texas due to a rare form of pneumonia, according to a new report from the Associated Press. Retton does not have health insurance, which has prompted his daughter to launch a crowdfunding campaign that has already surpassed its original goal.
“My amazing mom, Mary Lou, has a very rare form of pneumonia and is fighting for her life,” Retton’s daughter McKenna Kelly wrote on the crowdfunding website Spotfund.
“He is not able to breathe on his own. He has been in the ICU for more than a week now. Out of respect for him and his privacy, I will not reveal all the details. However, I will disclose that she did not have insurance,” Kelly added.
Family
Married to Shannon Kelly, they share the joys of raising four daughters: Shayla, Skyla, Emma and, of course, McKenna. Interestingly, McKenna followed in her mother’s footsteps and pursued her gymnastics talents at Louisiana State University.
