In recent years, NBA fans have become accustomed to hearing about “Hoodie Melo”—Carmelo Anthony playing pickup games wearing a hoodie. This week, golf fans are getting a chance to see “Hatless Rory.”
But unlike Hoodie Mello, Hatless Rory doesn’t have any kind of alter personality or vibe. In fact, Rory McIlroy has a simple reason why he’s not wearing a hat at the Olympics.
“My head is so small I have to have Nike make a custom hat,” McIlroy told PGATour’s Sean Martin. “So whenever I’m at a team event and the hats aren’t custom, they’re all too big.”

Sky Sports reports that Patrick Cantlay has not worn a cap this week in protest against players not being paid to compete, to which Cantlay said his cap does not fit well. There was an overwhelming reaction from spectators to the report, with thousands of European fans waving their caps in the air as Cantlay passed them. Rory McIlroy dominated the offseason headlines after a stellar 2012 season and looked ready to conquer the world as the world’s top-ranked player.
He came into the season having signed a major endorsement deal with Nike, having gained momentum from winning two majors and leading two rounds in earnings over the past two years.
But the 24-year-old McIlroy missed the cut in Abu Dhabi at the start of the year, lost in the first round of the Accenture Match Play tournament and was forced off the course at the Honda Classic due to “wisdom tooth pain”.
The situation has not improved much. McIlroy missed the cut at the BMW PGA Championship last week, and on Thursday at the Memorial he shot a 78 – the worst opening round of his career.
