Michael Lee McDaniel (born March 6, 1983) is an American football coach who is the head coach of the Miami Dolphins of the National Football League (NFL). A former longtime assistant to Mike and Kyle Shanahan, McDaniel began his NFL coaching career in 2005 as an intern for the Denver Broncos. McDaniels served as an assistant coach for the Houston Texans, Washington Redskins, Cleveland Browns, Atlanta Falcons and San Francisco. Francisco 49ers from 2017 to 2021, holding his first offensive coordinator position in 2021. McDaniels has appeared in two Super Bowls, first with the Falcons in 2017 and then with the 49ers in 2020.

Broncos ball boy
Mike McDaniels’ impressive rise to become one of the NFL’s most outstanding offensive coaches has proven puzzling to fans at times, especially considering that the Miami Dolphins head coach faced a difficult time as a player. and ultimately failed to make it into the NFL.
McDaniel spent three years playing college football at Yale from 2001–2004 but it soon became clear that he had no future as a pro ball player. His physical limitations have been cited as one of the main reasons why he was never able to reach the top. Jack Siedlecki, his coach at Yale, admitted in an interview with The Athletic, “I think Mike was probably about 150 pounds – and he didn’t really run very fast either.”
Letting fans call plays
In his second season at Florida, the 40-year-old is looking to build on his 10-8 2022 NFL season.
But although it may be a serious business, McDaniel is someone who always finds a way to keep things light.
Look no further than his recent cameo appearance in the humorous tryout commercial for season three of Manningcast on ESPN.
Standing before hosts Peyton and Eli Manning, McDaniel told them bluntly: “You guys are terrible evaluators and bullshit yourselves.”
And that sense of humor was evident during Miami’s 36-34 win over the Chargers at SoFi Stadium in Week 1.
As NFL Network insider, Daniel Jeremiah, reported, during their season opener, McDaniels and Chargers head coach Brandon Staley were shown on a 360-degree screen in the stadium after L.A. threw the challenge flag.
Obviously aware of the fact that thousands of fans were watching him closely, McDaniels looks towards the scoreboard and gives a slight sarcastic smile.
Then he looks toward the field and appears to say: “We’re going to run it five times, we’re going to run the ball five times.”
Of course, the Dolphins immediately followed it up by allowing quarterback Tua Tagovailoa to sling it.
