Shohei Ohtani Injury update: Fangraphs| Contract

The Los Angeles Angels confirmed that Shohei Ohtani left the second game of his team’s Thursday doubleheader at the Detroit Tigers due to cramps. Angels sportscaster Patrick O’Neill provided more details after Ohtani hit his second homer of the matchup in the fifth inning.

Ohtani pitched a one-hit shutout in Game 1, pitching a one-hit shutout with eight strikeouts in a 6–0 victory. He then hit two home runs in Game 2 as the Angels’ designated hitter in an 11–4 victory. Michael Stefanik pinch hit for Ohtani in the top of the seventh. The Angels can’t afford to lose Ohtani any longer, and thankfully it doesn’t look like that will happen as the team continues its push for the playoffs. Ohtani has hit a league-high 38 home runs with 80 RBIs this season. His 1.070 OPS leads MLB. On the mound, he is the Angels’ ace, going 9-5 with a 3.43 ERA and 156 strikeouts on the year.

Contract

$30 million. After re-signing with the Angels before the start of the season, Ohtani is making about the same amount this year. Ohtani re-signed with the Angels in 2021 to a two-year, $8.5 million contract. His $30 million deal is the largest contract ever for an arbitration-eligible player, surpassing the $27 million Mookie Betts made in 2020.
