Brittney Yvette Griner was born on October 18th in Houston, Texas to Raymond and Sandra Griner. She has three siblings, Shkera, Pier, and Decarlo, and is the youngest among them. Brittney spent most of her childhood in Houston and attended high school there as well.
While studying at Teague Middle School, Griner played volleyball and soccer. She once revealed in an interview with Texas Monthly, “I played volleyball and soccer in Humble. Because of my height, I played on the front line on the volleyball team, and I was the goalie on the soccer team.” Later, she enrolled at Nimitz High School located in Irving, Texas.
It was at Nimitz that Brittney began her basketball journey. Although she was not serious about basketball initially, she started taking it seriously during her freshman year. Interestingly, Griner has claimed that she did not consider basketball as her sport in eighth grade. At Nimitz, she played varsity basketball during her junior and senior years and had impressive stats, averaging about 26.3 points, 12.3 rebounds, and 2.2 assists, showcasing her potential as a prodigy from an early age.
