Knocked out

Frankie Edgar has retired from MMA after being brutally knocked down by up-and-comer Chris Gutierrez at Madison Square Garden.

The legendary former lightweight champion was planning to hang up his gloves regardless of the outcome at UFC 281 in New York. And he had another knockout defeat via Flying Knee to Gutierrez in the first round, who would certainly have lowered himself up the rankings with a win.

Edgar stepped into the octagon looking in solid shape at bantamweight, but couldn’t do much before being viciously carried away by Gutierrez, who is a decade his junior. At 41, he was competing after suffering five losses in his last seven appearances, including four knockouts and a particularly vicious pairing in the last two.

Fans were in full voice to support the New Jersey native, and was left in a stunned silence after attempting to shoot for a takedown and was caught flush with a flying knee. Fortunately, he was able to recover well enough to thank supporters in a post-fight interview, declaring his love for the sport and expressing his dismay at how it went.

Face rearranged

Marlon Vera rearranged UFC fighter Frankie Edgar’s face with a front kick sent from the darkest depths of hell on Saturday at the UFC 268 event inside Madison Square Garden in New York City.

Vera was on a tear through the bantamweight division, recovering from a loss to Jose Aldo last year, to knock out Davey Grant over the summer before eliminating Edgar this weekend.

His credentials in the division are considerable, especially as the strike that ended Edgar’s participation in the 135-pound match landed with such impact, it made the American seem like a completely different person (see above).

Edgar won the first of three rounds on all three judges’ scorecards, scoring a takedown, and landed 67 of 80 strikes for an accuracy reading of 83%.

The second round was more competitive, and so Vera needed something really big in the third to seal the win.
