Postgame press conference
Penn State proved fairly capable of competing toe-to-toe with the conference title favorite Saturday, but was ultimately ruined by turnovers, losing possession four times (three interceptions and a fumble to quarterback Sean Clifford) by the Koi Nittany Lions. Compared to the defensive takeaways. The end result is the sixth straight loss in this series for Penn State, which leads 6–2 and tours Indiana the following Saturday.
After the loss, Penn State head coach James Franklin met with members of the media at Beaver Stadium to discuss the matchup. He is now leading 1-8 against Ohio State.
Here’s a review of what the ninth-year Nittany Lions leader said after falling 73-36 in his PSU career.
First you must provide Ohio State credits. They are a really talented team.
I thought we had wagged our tails. In the first half, we were able to recover from the turnover and stay in the game and fight. But you can’t turn the ball too many times against that type of opponent and think you’re going to be successful. It’s something that we, for the most part, did a good job of this year, but we didn’t today.
I thought we worked hard and did some really cool things. There are so many things to be proud of, but only so many things we have to fix tomorrow. There are a lot of improvements that we obviously have to make.
But, for me, the game starts and ends with turnover. You can’t give that type of team a small field many times and be successful. This is going to make it really challenging.
Press conference
Franklin began his press conference by reviewing the team’s win against Minnesota during Saturday night’s white out. The Penn State head coach touched on areas of improvement, naming key metrics won by his team and team players of the week. Then, he moves to Ohio State by highlighting players on both sides of the ball, who have been recognized by his staff as outstanding players.
Tuesday’s media session centered around Penn State’s upcoming matchup with Ohio State. One question was related to the secondary and whether Franklin felt more confident with this group going into the game than the previous secondary. Another reporter wanted to know how Franklin and his staff could imitate CJ Stroud in practice for the defense. Finally, a reporter asked about role-playing turnover in big games.
Last week’s game was a major turning point for new linebacker Abdul Carter. The young sensation made his debut against Minnesota in White Out. Is this here to stay? Or will Penn State return to its base personnel next week against a more near-happy Ohio State team?
Defensive coordinator Manny Diaz is a newcomer to the Penn State and Ohio State rivalry. Does his presence benefit the Nittany Lions?
I appreciate all of you coming out and supporting Penn State football. First you must provide Ohio State credits. They are a really talented team. I thought we had wagged our tails. In the first half, we were able to recover from the turnover and stay in the game and fight.
