Thomas Jermaine Bryant (born July 31, 1997) is an American professional basketball player for the Los Angeles Lakers of the National Basketball Association (NBA). He played college basketball for the Indiana Hoosiers from 2015 to 2017.

Fantasy

Although Thomas Bryant played just 10 games last season, the truth is that he has been around since 2017, when the Lakers drafted him with the 42nd overall pick ahead of the 2018 season. Obviously, his 15 games and 72 minutes he played that year made him think later and it was not when he was pardoned and then signed to Washington that he began to find his place in the L.

Bryant’s sophomore season was enough to convince Wiz to fill his bag, and he hasn’t looked back since the end of that 2019 year. Bryant, however, has been plagued by injury with only 46 games in 2020 and 10 last season. He is quite a dominant, yet super-young force when he is available and on the court. For those in the fantasy league, the defensive woes of Bryant’s games shouldn’t affect his drafting/rostering so much: this kid boasts 129 ORTGs that goofy 24-13-3-1-2 lines per -100 assets Since he became a magician.

Injury

Bryant supplied 18 points (5-8 FG, 0-2 3Pt, 8-10 FT), seven rebounds, an assist, a steal and a block in 26 minutes in Thursday’s 114-99 preseason loss to the Timberwolves.

Bryant returns to the Lakers after playing 15 games for the team in his rookie season. In the four years leading up to Washington, injuries were a constant problem for Bryant. Apart from his 72-game 2018 season, he played only 83 games in the next three seasons, with only 27 games played in 2021. If he can stay healthy, he will be in a reverse position as Anthony Davis’ backup. Davis’ work schedule usually includes a few rest days per month, which can give Bryant several opportunities throughout the year.

Recently acquired Lakers center Thomas Bryant is coming off an ACL reconstruction surgery that forced him to miss most of last season with the Washington Wizards, playing only in the final 27 games of the season.

With those games under his belt and a full offseason — and Laker fans who saw him blossom during his time with the Wizards — there can be some hope that he will look good immediately. However, Bryant has struggled pre-season, looking a step slow and out of rhythm at both ends of the court.

There are certainly some major reasons for those conflicts. I explained them in the following video, specifically through the lens of ACL rupture and returning to pre-injury levels after surgery.

That hopefully gives some more perspective on what Thomas is dealing with as he continues his return to play and returns to the fitness process (yes, trust the process!) just because he’s on the court. But it’s back doesn’t mean he’s out of the woods right now.
