What happened to
It was shocking to see Akers return from a torn Achilles in just six months, but the run game struggled in all four postseason victories. Including his four most recent games, Akers has had a tough time breaking 3.0 yards per carry. Against the Cowboys last week, Akers had 13 carries for 33 yards.
Akers made 67 carries for 172 yards in the playoffs last year. Including his five games this year, this means Akers has 138 carries for 322 yards, averaging 2.3 yards per carry. During that time he has scored once and fumbled three times.
McVay declined to say whether Akers has a future with the team.
Whether Akers’ current absence is a result of LA’s struggle on the ground is not yet clear. What has become fairly clear is that there is something wrong between Acres and Ram and the game that has been going on for some time now.
Darrell Henderson will now get the start and possibly most of the reps against the Panthers on Sunday. The return of Malcolm Brown will serve as his new complement for the foreseeable future.
Akers’ future remains uncertain.
