What happened to
Arkansas quarterback KJ Jefferson took a hard hit late in Saturday’s game against Alabama and was forced to leave for Snap. He re-entered the game and threw an incomplete pass at third down, and did not return after that. Backup quarterback Cade Fortin played the final two drives.
After the game, coach Sam Pittman said that Jefferson had hit his head. On Monday, Pittman provided an update, saying Jefferson is “wait and see” for an Arkansas game at Mississippi State (4-1, 1-1 SEC) on Saturday (11 AM CT, SECN). .
“He has some mild symptoms,” Pittman said. “Every child is a little different in how they react. We’ve had people come back within three or four days; we’ve put people out for 27 days.”
Pittman said injured players are usually ruled out for the upcoming game if they are not able to practice by Wednesday of the game week. Reporters were told not to report Jefferson’s availability during Monday’s practice open periods because those open periods are a condition to be retained.
If Jefferson is unavailable to the Razorbacks (3-2, 1-2), Fortin will likely start against the Bulldogs.
Fortin entered the game against Alabama against Malik Hornsby, who was listed as the No. 2 quarterback on the depth chart. After the defeat, Pittman stated that creating the Fortin QB2 was a decision that had been made “for a while”.
Injury
Arkansas quarterback KJ Jefferson was listed as a game-time decision for the Razorbacks on Saturday against No. 23 Mississippi State. Head coach Sam Pittman said his quarterback was available, but was not sure exactly what would happen at kickoff. Jefferson suffered a head injury last week against Alabama and missed the early parts of the week for a Mississippi State game.
“Well, he’s available,” Pittman said before kickoff via Trey Biddy of Hogsports.com. “I don’t know what we’re going to do with him, to be honest with you. But he’s available to play.”
According to media in attendance, Jefferson was drafted and went through a pregame warmup.
Jefferson previously dealt with “mild symptoms” after suffering a head injury following last week’s game against Alabama.
“KJ hasn’t practiced yet,” Pittman said Wednesday morning. “We still don’t know if he’ll be able to practice today. Our rule is that if you’re going to play on Saturday you have to practice on Wednesday. So it’s just kind of wait and see. Honestly, I don’t know if he will be able to practice today or not. But there is definitely a chance that he will.
Status
One big question concerns quarterback KJ Jefferson’s position as the Razorbacks seek to break a 2-game losing streak. He moved in the fourth quarter of his game against the Texas AM and did not return, and was replaced by Cade Fortin.
During an appearance on SEC Network’s SEC Nation, head coach Sam Pittman revealed that Jefferson was “available” for the game, but was not sure whether his signal-caller would play.
“I just don’t do what we’re going to do with him,” Pittman told Ryan McGee.
Jefferson is seen on the field during the warmup. If he eventually doesn’t play or is limited, the use of both Fortin and Malik Hornsby could be “a real possibility” during the game, according to Pittman.
