Hates the queen
This appears to be an annual occurrence in which certain players have made it clear that they do not want to wear a poppy and have given reasons why, but the media is determined to make it a major flash point every year.
Nobody can argue that the whole point of the poppy is to remember the brave soldiers who fought for the country during the war. It is important to remember that different parts of Ireland have different interpretations of the poppy.
Family
The wife of footballer James McClean has revealed that she is concerned that her youngest daughter will not be ready to start school as planned in September.
Willow, three, has special needs for which she has yet to receive a formal diagnosis.
Erin, who has three children with the Stoke City and Ireland footballer, is concerned that Willow will be too young to begin school.
“This is my biggest worry right now,” she said on Instagram. It just blows my mind that she’s supposed to start school in September.
Why does not wear a poppy
The Royal British Legion has called the abuse suffered by Republic of Ireland international James McClean as a result of his refusal to wear the poppy “inexcusable.”
The Legion, which has a branch in the Republic, has exclusive rights to sell the poppy in November to raise funds for former British servicemen.
The Legion said in a statement that it “fully supports” Mr McClean’s decision not to wear the poppy on his shirt.
Mr McClean has been chastised for the last decade for refusing to wear the poppy in memory of the events of Bloody Sunday in his native Co Derry in 1972, when 13 people were shot dead by members of the British army during a protest.
