Spencer Robert Strider (born October 28, 1998) is an American professional baseball pitcher for the Atlanta Braves of Major League Baseball (MLB). He played college baseball for the Clemson Tigers, and was drafted by the Atlanta Braves in the fourth round of the 2020 Major League Baseball Draft. He made his MLB debut in 2021.

Rookie starter Spencer Strider set an Atlanta record with 16 strikeouts — and allowed just two hits while walking none — in eight dominant innings during a 3-0 win over the Rockies at Truist Park on Thursday night.

Strider was still touching 98 mph in the eighth inning, when two Rockies got on base — Michael Toglia doubled before Elias Diaz reached on an error by first baseman Matt Olson — and he had to bear down. A pair of sliders struck out Elehuris Montero and Sean Bouchard, Strider’s last two Ks on the night helping him take the Atlanta record from Hall of Famer John Smoltz, who struck out 15 Mets on April 10, 2005, and 15 Expos on May 24, 1992.

Draft

Strider attended the Christian Academy of Knoxville in Knoxville, Tennessee. He was drafted by the Cleveland Indians in the 35th round of the 2017 Major League Baseball Draft, but did not sign and played college baseball at Clemson University for the Clemson Tigers. In 2018, he played collegiate summer baseball with the Falmouth Commodores of the Cape Cod Baseball League. Strider missed the 2019 season after suffering a torn UCL that required surgery from Tommy John. He returned from injury in 2020 and was drafted and signed by the Atlanta Braves in the fourth round of the 2020 Major League Baseball Draft.

He was a former top prep arm originally drafted by Cleveland back in the 2017 draft in the 35th round. He chose to go to college instead and faced a rough road.

He mostly fell out of pen in his first year, missing 2019 due to Tommy John, and played only 12 innings in the short 2020 season. Strider was not projected to be drafted in 2020 by many, but the Braves saw something they liked, and it seems to have been stolen.
