Family
“I did a reconstruction about 15 years ago, so there’s a little degeneration and I’m getting older,” Rutan said.
“And when you have two little kids you start thinking that you still want to step foot with them, play cricket and be with the kids as they get older.
“It’s something you start thinking about.
“Jack, every time I come home he wants to go down in the oval and take a kick and there’s still a few more years to go.”
Rutten was recalled this week after being rested for the showdown and feels he has a lot to offer on the field and as a mentor and off it, as the Crows chase down the final spot.
Rutan was adamant on contributing till the end. To borrow a line from former captain Simon Goodwin when he announced his retirement, Rutten is another who didn’t want to crawl to the finish line.
Nickname
He was nicknamed ‘Truck’ for a reason. Whenever there is speculation about the origins of football club nicknames, it is appalling, but we can suggest.
Press conference
Essendon coach Ben Rutten has avoided the ax, while chairman Paul Brasher stepped down ahead of the club’s embarrassing 84-point loss to Port Adelaide on Sunday evening.
The Bombers have endured a scary season since reaching the finals last year, finishing 15th on the AFL ladder with seven wins in the opening 21 rounds.
Rumors about Rutten’s future began on Monday, but Rutten’s fate was left to the top after an impromptu board meeting.
