Serena Williams has hinted that retirement may not be far off after winning her first singles match in more than a year.

The 40-year-old beat world number 57 Nuria Parijas Díaz 6-3, 6-4 at the Canadian Open in Toronto for her first taste of success in singles since the French Open in the spring of 2021.

Williams was very vague about her future plans after returning from a year at Wimbledon, but asked about her motivation to play in Canada, she told reporters: “I think there’s just a light at the end of the tunnel. I don’t know, I’m getting closer to the light. Lately it’s been me. I can’t wait to get to that light.”

Who is coach

Eric Hechman, the coach of his sister Venus Williams, also caught everyone’s attention. Hechtman, who later re-shared the post on his Instagram stories, is expected to accompany Serena Williams to Wimbledon.

“LFG! So excited to have this trip with Goat,” Hechman wrote.

On Tuesday, the Western and Southern Open released their entry lists, which also include the 23-time Grand Slam champion.

Williams is a two-time champion of the Cincinnati tournament (2014, ’15). The last time the 40-year-old made an appearance in two tournaments of the US WTA Series was in 2015, before the US Open. She was able to enter the tournament this year on the basis of her protected ranking.

The tournament takes place from August 13 to 21. That means Williams will play back-to-back weeks after entering the National Bank Open in Toronto starting August 5.
