Demerius Anton Thomas (December 25, 1987 – December 9, 2021) was an American professional football player who was a wide receiver in the National Football League (NFL) for ten seasons, primarily with the Denver Broncos. He played college football for the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets, and was drafted by the Broncos in the first round of the 2010 NFL Draft. Cause of death
The former NFL star wide receiver died of complications related to a seizure disorder, according to an autopsy report from the Fulton County Medical Examiner’s Office. The report was obtained by 9NEWS and The Denver Post.
Thomas was found dead in the bath of his Roswell, Georgia, home on December 9 last year, less than six months after retiring from the NFL. He was 33 years old and 16 days away from his 34th birthday.

According to the report, the medical examiner, Karen Sullivan, classified the manner of Thomas’ death as “undetermined.”
Thomas’ family believed that his death was related to seizures. Thomas was having a seizure after a 2019 car accident where his car rolled several times and hit his head on the windshield after driving over 70 mph in the 30 mph zone.
Last month, Thomas was posthumously diagnosed with stage 2 chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) after doctors at Boston University’s CTE Center examined his brain. CTE is a degenerative brain disease caused by repeated trauma to the head.

Excerpts from the report were shared with ESPN on Friday. Thomas was found dead at his Roswell, Georgia, home on December 9 at the age of 33, and an autopsy was performed the next day.
In December, the medical examiner’s office issued a statement that “the cause and manner of death are pending the completion of laboratory studies and microscopic tissue samples.” In the final report, the medical examiner stated that Thomas’s cause of death is undetermined and it was unknown whether the seizure disorder was the result of natural causes or due to an impact to Thomas’ head during his NFL career.
Last month, Boston University researchers told ABC News that Thomas was suffering from chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), a degenerative brain disease, but said CTE did not cause his death. The autopsy report said the same researchers said they did not believe Thomas’ CTE caused the seizure disorder.
The autopsy report revealed that Thomas, who was found dead in the shower, had traces of nicotine and marijuana in his system, but neither was listed as a contributing factor in his death.
At the time of his death, some members of Thomas’ family publicly stated that he had suffered seizures for almost a year before he died. Several former teammates at the time also said that Thomas had told them he had had seizures in recent months.
